Scarnati Announces $1.5 Million Grant for Johnsonburg Rail Yard BypassHarrisburg – State Sen. Joe Scarnati (R-25) today announced the approval of a $1.5 million grant to help pay for a critical rail project in Johnsonburg, Elk County. The senator said Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad, Inc. will use the funding to connect the Allegheny & Eastern with the Buffalo & Pittsburgh main lines in Johnsonburg to bypass the Johnsonburg Yard for thru trains. "Rail freight is a vital link in the economy of our region and the commonwealth, and this grant will help improve the timely delivery of goods, which is critical in today's marketplace," said Scarnati. "Rail is not only a celebrated part of our history, it's a key component of our region’s future, and to remain competitive it is important that the rail lines continue to improve to serve 21st century needs." The funds are provided through the state Department of Transportation's 2008 Rail Transportation Assistance Program and 2009 Rail Freight Assistance Program.
