Scarnati to Rendell: Don't Furlough Workers

WARREN—As budget negotiations continue, State Senator Joe Scarnati appeals to Governor Rendell to not furlough state workers.  Rendell has unilaterally decided to furlough workers beginning Monday July 9, 2007.

"I think Governor Rendell has allowed his emotions to interfere with sound judgment," Scarnati said.  "While the legislature continues to negotiate a state budget, Rendell has failed to even come to the table.  Instead he chooses to threaten the legislature by using the Pennsylvania worker as a pawn in his cruel game.  I find this unnecessary and unacceptable."

According to Scarnati, the Governor has sole power to furlough or not to furlough workers during a budget impasse.  In the past, Governors have chosen not to go this route, as they recognized the negative impact it would have on families of the Commonwealth.

"There is no need for Governor Rendell to furlough workers," Scarnati added.  "It would be in his and everyone's best interest to continue negotiating a sensible, productive state budget.  However, this can only occur if he decides to come to the Capitol."

"Again, the Governor does not have to listen to me, but he needs to hear from families across Pennsylvania whose livelihoods he is placing in danger," Scarnati concluded.  "Once he understands the realities of families who live paycheck to paycheck, it is my belief he will pocket his anger and reconsider his decision."
