Scarnati Announces Funds to Upgrade Senior Centers in Jefferson, McKean, Potter, Warren Counties

Grants for new equipment, renovations and repairs

Warren – State Sen. Joe Scarnati (R-25) today announced the approval of state grants to pay for new equipment, renovations and repairs at senior community centers in Jefferson, McKean, Potter and Warren counties.

Scarnati said senior centers provide a broad range of services, including nutritious meals, health screenings, consumer education, creative arts, exercise programs, and special events. Some centers also offer employment opportunities and transportation.

"We have a vibrant senior citizen community in the 25th Senatorial District, and senior centers are an excellent resource," said Scarnati. "Some of the facilities are in need of new equipment or renovations, and I am pleased to announce these grants to help the centers pay for this necessary work."

Senator Scarnati announced the following grants:

  • Jefferson County

Heritage House, Brookville -- $38,000 to replace the center's cooler/freezer

  • McKean County

Port Allegheny Senior Center -- $5,000 for electric system upgrades

Greater Bradford Senior Activity Center, Bradford -- $46,000 for a kitchen addition and the purchase of kitchen appliances

  • Potter County

Oswayo Valley Senior Center, Shinglehouse -- $3,000 for a gas furnace and air conditioning

  • Warren County

Warren Senior Citizen, Warren -- $ $48,000 for roof renovations and gutter/downspout repairs

The grants were approved by the state Department on Aging.

"These grants will allow local senior centers to better serve the community. I encourage older citizens to look for a senior center near them in the blue pages of the phone book, under 'Guide to Human Services.' With arts and exercise programs, health screenings and more, senior centers have much to offer and are certainly worth a visit," said Scarnati.
