Scarnati Defines Marriage: Between One Man and One Woman

HARRISBURG – State Senator Joe Scarnati of the 25th district says marriage is and must continue to be a union between one man and one woman.  That's why Scarnati has signed on to co-sponsor an amendment, proposed by State Senator Bob Regola to further define the State Constitution's definition of marriage.

"Without question, marriage has been and should always be a sacred bond between one man and one woman," said Scarnati.  "According to the Pennsylvania Family Institute, 20 states have already amended their constitutions to protect marriage, which proves this topic is of vital concern to people across the nation. As legislators, we want to keep the definition of marriage instilled in the Commonwealth for generations to come."

The Pennsylvania Family Institute found 43 states have laws that will not allow same-sex marriages to be recognized.  Therefore, more than 80 percent of states agree that the definition of marriage should not be altered in any way.

According to Scarnati, the amendment states, only a marriage between one man and one woman shall be valid or recognized as a marriage in this Commonwealth, and neither the Commonwealth nor any of its political subdivisions shall create or recognize a legal status identical or substantially equivalent to that of marriage for unmarried individuals.

Scarnati attended the 'Stand Up for Marriage in Pennsylvania' rally held in the Capitol Rotunda.  The rally was sponsored by the Pennsylvania Family Institute.   The amendment, referred to as the Pennsylvania Marriage Protection Amendment was officially introduced by supporters from both the House and the Senate.

"I am certainly pleased to be given the opportunity to show my support and put my trust in an amendment that I truly believe in," said Scarnati.  "I will continue to support marriage, between a man and a woman as it is the traditional model of the family."
